Everything substantial about the dead guy has already been blogged, discussed, debated and screeded to whatever predisposition one might have toward the topic of dead terrorists, so I’ll offer one comment.
Take a look at this picture from the briefing yesterday.
Why did they take the time to frame and matte Zarqawi’s morgue photos? Sure, I can see cleaning the guy up before taking a few snapshots, but what’s with the custom presentation? I guess they can always hang them in Rumsfeld’s Rogues Gallery (I picture a cave, display cases and a giant penny) or sell them to Zarqawi’s widow(s).
I mean, that’s no off-the-shelf frame from the local Ikea (Irakea?). Sometime, in the few hours between the time they recovered the guy and had the press briefing, someone went to the trouble of having custom frames made. Some PR guy said “You know what? Let’s not go with the foamboard this time, I have a coupon from HangUps…”
I have a feeling that, adjacent to the briefing room there was a gift shop where you can buy those images in framed 8X10s, posters and postcards. I’m looking now to see if the Pentagon has a Cafepress site.
